Kit Review
By Mike Arnold By
Italeri 1/35th scale
I usually tend to models that are a little different, either a unique subject or one that has some meaning to me. That is why the Camionetta AS 42 Sahariana caught my eye. It roughly translates as “desert jeep”. It was based on the AB41 armored car. It was built as a response to the successful LRDG. It had two armament configurations: one with the 20mm cannon/machinegun and the other with 47/32 anti-tank cannon. Several dozen were produced with some surviving the war to become police vehicles until the 50s.
The kit comes in a nicely hinged box with a booklet has black and white photos showing the desert vehicle in action and color photos with tips on building the kit. The resin and PE are nicely displayed when the box is opened. The parts look well molded in a sand color with no flash. The resin parts are for the engine and radiator, though I’m not sure why as the do not have any detail that would not be there otherwise. The engine can only be seen if the rear hood is cut and glued in the open position. Also in resin are two figures. Nice touches are the PE parts for the jerry can brackets and the sand ramps that bolt onto the sides. The jerry cans themselves are molded in groups of 5 with several individual. The instructions are in an A4 size format and seem to be easy to follow.

This is a well done kit. Though the price seems a little high, it is a good value considering the quality of the kit and the resin and PE parts and it is a little different from the usual German or allied equipment. I think I will have to move this one to the top of the pile.
